2017 Boys State Cross Country Finals

CIF State Cross Country Championships
November 25, 2017 Woodward Park 5K Course, Fresno CA

Division V
Sonoma Academy will have a lot to celebrate tonight, not only with Rylee’s win, but the boys team had an incredible day themselves.
Junior Andre Williams lead the team this year to their second top ten finish, in division V, in as many years, he was also the first NCS runner in the race and all three ahead of him are graduating.
He also had the Coyotes best ever individual finish placing 4th in 15:53 on the 5k course.
Only St. Helena’s Brian Cole (2nd 2006) and El Molino’s Brian Schulz (3rd 2016) have ever placed higher, with old school best being 9th Austin Orr, Sonoma Academy 2012.
Only Cole (15:50) has ever run faster on this course from the Coastal Mountain Conference than Andre.
Andre started the race very conservative coming through the first split way back in 30th with teammate Kheva Mann in 33rd.
As runners started dropping off the lead pack Andre was now in 9th at second split with Kheva in 17th.
Andre would pass another five runners in the last mile to finish 4th, 15th last year for Kelseyville, with the team finishing in 10th.
Kheva at 16:30 would improve on his 27th place finish last year to grab a top 20 spot in 18th.
Brendan Loftus (42nd 17:01), Eduardo Garcia (121st 18:06), Luke Fuette (147th 18:27), Jack Roney (160th 18:47), Alex Pallais (165th 18:59) all did their part to help the Coyotes into the top 10.
University(SF) of the NCS would win the State title.

Division III
Maria Carrillo boys were also able to earn a top 10 team place in part because of the strong finishes by their #2 & #4 runners Colton Swinth and Zach Lindemann. In the final section of the course Swinth passed 11 runners while Lindemann passed 14. Carrillo beat Aptos for the 10th team spot by 6 points.
Ben Lawson lead the Puma’s as usual. Lawson began slowly after the first split well back in 70th, trailing Windsor’s Lucas Chung in 60th.
Over the next section of the course both passed about half the field in front of them with Chung moving from 60th to 42nd and Lawson passing him as well to move from 70th all the way to 38th. Puma teammates Rory Smail and Swinth also moved up 15 spots during this section.
At the finish NCS Champion Liam Anderson of Redwood passed the two runners he had trailed during the run to win the individual honors.
Lawson finished in 40th (16:34), Swinth 60th 16:43), Smail (67th 16:47), Lindemann (99th 17:06), Harry Frankl (104th 17:09), Scott Kruetzfeldt (114th 17:15), Will McCloud (189th 18:28).
Chung finished in 46th at 16:36.

Division IV
Piner’s Jonny Vargas ran the Empire’s second fastest time of the day finishing in 16:28 for 21st place.
That helped the Piner team to a 14th place finish.
Emmanuel Delgado passed 21 runners in the middle section and then another 12 at the end to finish in 76th at 17:12.
Right behind him was Kevin Garcia in 79th at 17:14.
